What Happens If It Rains on Your Waimea Canyon Day?

It's one of the questions I hear most from guests booking a Waimea Canyon tour. What if it rains? Here's how I handle weather on canyon days, and why a cloudy morning rarely means a lost day.
How often does weather affect a Waimea Canyon tour?
Kauai's wetter season generally runs from November through March, but weather in the canyon can change quickly any time of year. Fortunately, rain rarely affects my tours. There have been only a handful of times when my guests haven't been able to enjoy the canyon views.
How I decide whether to go, wait, or change plans
I monitor weather forecasts, storm conditions and road closures, so I know what we're heading into. Because every tour is private, we're not tied to a fixed schedule, and I can adjust the day around what the weather is doing.
What we do when the canyon is clouded in
When the clouds settle over the canyon, I often take my guests to lunch nearby for a relaxing meal while we wait for them to clear. Lunch isn't included in the tour price, so plan on buying your own meal.
A cloudy morning can still end with the best views
I've had days when the canyon was completely covered in clouds, only to reveal spectacular views after lunch. That's the beauty of a private tour. We can be flexible and wait for the right moment instead of rushing on to the next stop.
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes
- A lightweight rain jacket
- An extra layer for the cooler mountain temperatures
Kauai's weather can change quickly, so it's always good to be prepared.
A little rain doesn't mean missing out on the beauty of Waimea Canyon. Sometimes, all it takes is a little patience.
You can see pickup locations and prices on my Private Guided Waimea Canyon Tour page.
Every tour is private. I plan the route, drive and guide myself, one group at a time. Pick one of my tours, or tell me what you'd like to see and I'll build the day around it.
